July 1st, 2007 : iTunes 7.3 upgrade problems

Today I got one of those "new version available" messages from itunes. After installing the following message pops up...

The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-50)

There is a check box "Do not warn me again"

So what to do? If I ignore it maybe I won't be able to make playlists etc... I found a workaround that worked for me. What I did was this...

File Menu->Export Playlist

And I then saved the exported xml file to a directory on my hard drive. Then I closed itunes and renamed the old library files I had (kept them around for backup). They were in...

"My Documents\My Music\iTunes"
I renamed...

iTunes Library.itl --> backup_iTunes Library.itl
iTunes Music Library.xml --> backup_iTunes Music Library.xml

And then I restarted iTunes. After restarting iTunes creates blank ones. Now to get your old playlists back you do...

File Menu->Import

And import the xml file you exported when you used the export playlist command. The new imported playlist then worked correctly for me.

Now that itunes is working again you can relax and play some games....
